An Ingenious Use For Plastic Bags

The fate of the Earth worries me. While most days, I tend to live my life in blissful oblivion, forgetful of the fact that it's hotter this summer and there may be less snow when winter comes. It's not that I don't care - it's that caring hurts and scares me.

Every so often, I'm shockingly reminded of how the world I brought my children into is changing drastically. A story of a polar bear trapped on a small island after swimming days in search for food makes me want to cry. My youngest's tender skin will never feel the safe kiss of sun. And air quality - will my children have to live under domes like the characters of The Running Man after I'm gone?

I worry they won't be safe from the Earth they live on, and yet every now and then, I find something hopeful. An ingenious idea for plastic bags that survive 400 years of time in a landfill before degrading doesn't seem so silly after all.  It seems smart.

Katharine Cobey's creative use of shredded plastic bags is amazing. Taking a material we can't seem to live without and yet hate for its very longevity, Cobey knits clothing into wearable items such as dresses or coats.  True, her work lies more towards artistic expression, but the thought itself is amazing nonetheless.  Who would have considered plastic bags a resource for durable clothing?

Maybe one day, this is the clothing my children will wear every day.
