Rob Brezsny - Not Just Another Astrologer
Seriously. This man is totally whacked, but in a good way. He's an astrologer with a sense of humor. The service he provides can be summed up like this: He gets you to loosen up.
Spirituality is one of those things that people are known to take much too seriously. Sex is another. Money and love are two more. What Brezsny points out repeatedly is that all of these things are here to make our life better. They aren't here to substitute for a life. They aren't here to make us happy. We're supposed to already be happy.
For instance, if your lover leaves you, you don't have to be depressed because you now have no one to love and no one to love you. Go outside and transfer that feeling to the trees and the sky. Love yourself. When you do those things, you will realize that you are the exact same person you were before the big goodbye. Don't buy in to the sappy love songs that tell you that your life is supposed to end now.
Rob Brezsny writes an astrology column called Free Will Astrology. Once upon a time, it was called Real Astrology, but his site and his message have been evolving for years. He's written a couple of books. One is Pronoia, which he defines as the opposite of paranoia. I highly recommend his book, "The Televisionary Oracle", if you like to totally enter a new world and discover a new way of thinking when you read.
Oh, and he has the best astrology column I've ever read. They frequently come with neat little assignments that are designed either to show you how we blow everything out of proportion or to make you have fun. Life is all about fun. That seems to be the message behind the man.
Brezsny does things like a sort of reverse panhandling, where he dresses up in a business suit and gives away money on the streets. He follows the M.O. of a beggar, just with opposite results. He gets people to really relax and enjoy sex instead of over-dramatizing it, by introducing them to a concept called Comic Sutra. He also holds ceremonies for people in which they marry themselves. It all sounds very silly, and that's the point. He brings silliness into people's lives and gets them to think differently. If that isn't a great service, I don't know what is.
