The Jonesborough Storytelling Festival
Perhaps one of your favorite memories as a child was listening to your father or grandfather tell you stories. Do you remember the way in which they immediately grabbed your attention? Can you recall what it felt like for time and space to be suspended indefinitely as you hung on every word?
Unfortunately, we as adults often fail to truly lose ourselves in stories. Our life experience constantly reminds us that no matter how intriguing a story may be, it is not real.
What if, though, we let ourselves go? What if we were willing to suspend our disbelief, even if temporarily? The Jonesborough Storytelling Festival is an annual event which takes place in Jonesborough, Tennessee. This charming little town is home to one of the most spellbinding events in North America. Spread out over the course of a weekend in October, the festival has continually enchanted both young and old.
Featuring some of the world’s most talented storytellers, the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival is now in its 35th year. The town of Jonesborough is consistently filled with thousands of people who share an appreciation for the well-told story. It is not uncommon to see three generations of family members walking the brick streets of Tennessee’s oldest town as they wait for the next tale to be spun.
It goes without saying that those who tell these stories excel at their craft. But what kind of stories are common during this fall festival? Well, there truly is a little bit of something for everyone.
From silly kid-oriented stories told in the warm sunshine to adult-friendly creepy tales told during the chilly, dark night, anything goes. It is this wide range of stories that makes the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival such a welcome event.
It is not unusual for adults to be seen enjoying themselves as much as their children while listening to a tender interpretation of a story they heard when they were young. The stories are as timeless as the lost art of storytelling.
If you occasionally pine for the days when you believed stories simply because you didn’t know better, or because you hadn’t yet developed the jaded nature of adulthood, plan on visiting the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival. You can visit storytelling center for more information.
